He was a talented member of the Austrian downhill ski team of the early 1990s before he died from a shattered pelvis caused by a crash. As it turns out, his death was the first of many for the team. During a 3 year period from January 1991 to January 1993, 5 members of the Austrian ski team would lose their lives. Ulrike Maier was a 5-time World Cup champion ski racer from Austria who competed alongside Reinstadler. She competed at the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics. She had become a fan favorite 1989, when she won the first of two world titles while she was three months pregnant with her daughter, Melanie. Born in Rauris, Salzburg, where her father ran a ski school, Maier won gold medals at the World Championships in both 1989 and 1991. She also took home the giant slalom silver medal in the 1991 event. Throughout her career, she attained 21 podiums and 59 top ten finishes.. In 1994 at the age of 26, Maier was competing in the women's World Cup in Germany as it was being broadcasted live. As she passed through a narrow part of the course less than twenty seconds from the finish, Maier's right ski caught an inside edge at 65 mph causing her to lose control. In the live broadcast, she can be seen losing her helmet, tumbling over several times as she is hit by one of her skis that snapped free. She died of her injuries shortly after being airlifted to a nearby hospital 15 miles east of the event, but the team of surgeons was unable to save her. "She had no chance," said Günther Hofmann, a co-director of the hospital. He stated Maier was virtually dead upon arrival to the ER. After news of Maier's death, reporters who chronicled her career stood in silence in the press room. Some hugged each other to find comfort. Prior to her fateful race, she had considered retirement at the end of the 1994 season, due to disappointing performances at the 1992 Olympic Games in France and the 1993 World Championships in Japan. She reconsidered this after winning two slalom races during the 1994 season and claiming podium finishes, planning to continue until the 1995 World Championship in Spain. She was buried in her home village of Rauris, where thousands attended her funeral, including her 5 year old daughter and fiancé Hubert Schweighofer. They had planned to have their wedding later that same year. Teammate and close friend Anita Wachter wore Maier's world championship medals during the event. Initially, it was claimed that her death was caused by hitting a wooden timing post on the side of the course. Maier's fiancé, Hubert Schweighofer criticized the organizers of the race and filed suit against them. However, several months later the court found that Maier actually did not hit the timing post with her head, but probably broke her neck by crashing into a pile of snow on the border of the race course. The court did not find any negligence from the organizers and dismissed the suit. Manslaughter charges against two FIS race officials were dropped after a settlement was reached in 1996.
